A Weekend of Friendship, Fun, and Service: Christchurch Rotary’s Visit to Cognac

The picturesque town of Cognac, France, played host to fifteen Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Christchurch as they embarked on a special journey to celebrate the 68th anniversary of their twinning with the Rotary Club of Cognac. This biennial tradition, which saw the Cognac Rotarians visit Christchurch in 2023, reflects the enduring commitment between the two clubs to foster international friendship, cultural exchange, and collaborative service.

From the moment they arrived, the Christchurch Rotarians were immersed in the rich heritage of the Cognac region. A tour of the historic Grand Marnier castle and distillery offered a fascinating glimpse into the craftsmanship behind one of France’s most renowned liqueurs, while a leisurely picnic in a Remy Martin vineyard provided the perfect setting to enjoy the region’s famed produce and explore its historical links to the UK.

Yet, it wasn’t just about enjoying fine food and scenic landscapes—the weekend was also about service and giving back. In an exciting and nostalgic moment, Christchurch Rotary joined a charity car rally organised by their Cognac counterparts to support Rotary’s End Polio campaign. Riding through the countryside in a fleet of classic Citroen 2CVs, the Rotarians helped raise vital funds for this global initiative, further strengthened by Christchurch Rotary’s generous £750 donation to the cause.

A formal reception at Chateau Pellison, Cognac Rotary’s headquarters, provided a warm and welcoming space for old friendships to be rekindled and new connections to be made. For some Christchurch members, this was their first visit, while others had fondly returned, having been part of this special relationship for many years. Regardless of experience, all were united in the joy of the occasion, strengthened by the glorious sunshine and shared laughter.

As Christchurch Rotary reflects on a weekend filled with camaraderie and purpose, one thing is certain—their commitment to global friendship and service remains as strong as ever. With fond memories of their time in Cognac, they eagerly anticipate welcoming their French friends to Christchurch in 2027, continuing a tradition that embodies the very heart of Rotary: serving others whilst having fun.
